Polwit Opapant
Biography
Polwit Opapant is a renowned Thai composer and music educator, celebrated for his innovative Intervalic Approach technique. Born and raised in Thailand, Opapant's musical journey began at the age of 14 when he started playing saxophone with the Monfort High School Band in 1986. His passion for jazz was ignited during his first year at Payap University in 1989, leading him to form a small jazz band in Chiang Mai.
Opapant's formal education took him to Middlesex University in London, UK, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Composition with honors (1996-1998). He further honed his skills at the University of Northern Colorado's School of Music and Performing Arts, graduating with a Master of Music degree in Music Theory and Composition (2001-2004). It was during this period that he developed the Intervalic Approach theory, which has since become a hallmark of his compositional style.
Opapant's notable works include the seminal piece "Monteverde Rhapsody" (2004), featuring tenor saxophone and winds orchestra, as well as numerous orchestral, chamber, and instrumental compositions. His innovative approach has earned him recognition, including the "Outstanding Soloist" award at the Greeley Jazz Festival in 2003.
As a music educator, Opapant has taught at Silpakorn University from 2005 to 2026, sharing his expertise with the next generation of musicians. He has also performed internationally with various jazz groups, solidifying his reputation as a master composer and performer. Throughout his career, Opapant has remained committed to pushing the boundaries of music, exploring new harmonies, and creating complex, intricate melodies that continue to inspire and delight audiences worldwide.
